HOW TO ORGANISE YOUR KITCHEN – PART TWO BENCH AND CUPBOARDS

With the Pantry now completed the rest of the kitchen will be a breeze.

You can start anywhere but once you start to emptying cupboards I recommend cleaning them to save time later. Look at your wall surface, using paper towel holders and magnetic knife racks save on bench space while been in easy reach. Drawer dividers for cutlery look professional and help for easy access. Ensure you clean the stove top, oven, overhead fan, window and window sills.

Depending on your cupboard space you can break up into: used daily, used weekly and occasional use. Alternatively, you can break into: cookware, containers, food prep items, bakeware, cleaning products.  You can keep loose or if you are tight on space, the use of cubes or plastic containers allows for stacking. If you have appliances you haven’t used in over 12 months, test to ensure they still work but do not leave them alone – watch for anything unusual or any burning smells. Be realistic about how many cups, plates, bowls etc you really need and donate anything you do not require. This also applies to plastic containers; it is great to have 10 x 2L containers but if you only use 2 a week you only need 4 at the most.

Once everything is in its rightful place clean all benches, stove tops, oven etc. Ensure the benches only have your daily used items (coffee machine, toaster, dishwashing items etc) and ensure you have plenty of space for food prep. If your kitchen has limited bench space, you can purchase boards which go over sinks to give you more food prep room.

Now your kitchen is clean, organized and looking the way you want you can add any personal touches such as a reed diffuser or photos.

To maintain your kitchen keep to the following cleaning schedule:

  • Daily: clean and put away dishes, wipe down benches, empty full bins
  • Weekly: give the benches and stove top a good clean, clean and sanitise the kitchen sink area. Tidy up your cupboards, pantry and fridge noting on what items are running low for the next grocery shop. Sweep and mop the floor.
  • Monthly: clean cupboards, pantry and fridge – this could be a quick wipe down when it is well maintained. Review any food items that are becoming close to their used by date and priortise them in cooking. Clean window, window sills, oven and overhead fan.

Your kitchen is now complete, have a treat and a drink and admire all the good work you have done.
